‘We cannot’ - Vitor Pereira fires warning to two Wolves players after Fulham defeat
Wolves boss Vitor Pereira was brutally honest in his press conference following the 2-1 loss to Fulham.
Vitor Pereira has fired a warning to his players after two mistakes made life very difficult for Wolverhampton Wanderers against Fulham on Tuesday night.
The Old Gold conceded within the first 65 seconds of both halves in unacceptable fashion to give themselves - not once but twice - a mountain to climb. Ryan Sessegnon opened the scoring with a minute on his first Premier League start in two years before Rodrigo Muniz put Fulham 2-1 ahead with one of the first kicks of the second period.
Sessegnon’s opener was simply too easy as Nelson Semedo got sucked in and didn’t even spot the wing-back’s run in behind. Muniz’s goal was just as poor from a Wolves defensive standpoint as Adama Traore was able to carve open the back five with one pass before Muniz delicately lobbed an overly-eager Jose Sa from just outside the area.
Wolves boss points finger at mistake-makers
Pereira thought Wolves reacted well to both goals conceded but couldn’t be more infuriated by his side twice going behind in simple fashion. Although he didn’t name the culprits for the goals conceded, it was clear he was displeased with Semedo and Santiago Bueno for not tracking the runs of the scorers.
“Today I’m frustrated because after three days we play again and start the first half conceding a goal, a very easy goal. We cannot have our level of concentration or focus not in the level of the game,” Pereira said during his post-match press conference.
“After, we reacted and started to play against a good team. We created some situations and scored the goal but when you start the second half in the same way, it’s very difficult.
“In the second half I felt the team was tired because the movement and pressing was not what we used to do. When they started with the subs, they have a lot of solutions in the squad and for us we do not.”
Vitor Pereira fires warning
The defeat means Wanderers remain five points above the relegation zone with Ipswich Town and Leicester City still to play this midweek. All associated with Wolves will be watching those results anxiously in the hope the Fulham disappointment isn’t too costly.
Either way, these mistakes must be eradicated from Wolves’ game if they are to win future matches. Every game feels like a cup final at this stage of the season with another couple of wins probably enough to seal the Old Gold’s status in the top flight for another campaign.
Pereira, very well aware of this fact, has warned his players not to slip up again. “My opinion, if you didn’t start the first half and second half right you concede goals because we need to defend the goal. Today we committed mistakes that we cannot commit again,” the manager said.
“It means that tomorrow I will start the work correcting these mistakes and trying to think about our mistakes. We need to look at ourselves, it’s not about the other team - it’s about us. Today the players they tried everything but not in the right way.”
