Vitor Pereira publicly complains to Jeff Shi and sends demand to Wolves players

Vitor Pereira spoke openly and honestly with the media after Wolves’ 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur.

With seven points out of nine secured so far, Pereira has enjoyed a hugely successful start to his reign as Wolves manager but the 56-year-old has several demands he wants addressed.

Old Gold chairman Jeff Shi will need to cough up cash this January to keep his new head coach satisfied as Wolves are in dire need of a new centre-back. Wanderers were already light in defence but a new hamstring injury for Toti Gomes - expected to keep him out for three to four weeks - has deepened the problem.

Pereira addressed the situation during the post-match press conference at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The manager is confident that hot prospects Alfie Pond and Bastien Meupiyou will break through eventually but an immediate impact is perhaps too much of an ask. Pereira instead wants to utilise the transfer market.

“With time, we can have more solutions because we have two young players, two young centre-backs on the bench, but we are a bit short,” he admitted.

“We're playing with three at the back and I don't want three centre-backs, I want just one central defender and a full-back left or right. But it's a position that we need to bring someone in with some expertise.”

Wolves boss demands more from players

Another topic Pereira discussed was the initial vibes he’s felt from the squad over his first full week in charge. The Portuguese is delighted with the mentality shown from his players but he’s demanding better productivity will the ball, as to align with his possession-dominant philosophy.

“What I am feeling is a good energy, I’m feeling that all the players are there to help the team,” Pereira said. “They want to play in the Premier League and for this we need points, we need to fight and to compete. This is what they are showing me, I’m happy and proud of their work.

“We need to improve a bit the possession and what we do with the possession because for me it’s not just to have possession, it’s to have possession with intentionality to open the spaces, to attack the spaces, to attract the other team in the spaces to go. This is the work that I need time to do.”

Pereira will be relieved to have his first full week to prepare for a match as Wolves’ next figure - at home to the high-flying Nottingham Forest - is eight days away. He told BirminghamWorld he will spend the next two days with his family - also giving the players some time off - but analysis on Forest will start on the journey home.
