'Could develop quickly' - Man Utd targeting shock second Wolves swoop as £27.5m star films farewell video

Matheus Cunha might not be the only Wolves player transferring to Man United this summer.

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Nelson Semedo.

The Red Devils are set to complete the £62.5 million acquisition of star forward Matheus Cunha on June 1, but their raid of Wolves might not be done there as Semedo has been lined up for a potential transfer. Ruben Amorim will be backed in the summer window as the head coach seeks to address issues with United’s squad – and the Portuguese could link up with a fellow countryman at Old Trafford.

Football Transfers reports United have a strong interest in signing Semedo and that the situation “could develop quickly”, with the right-back’s contract at Wolves expiring on June 30. United have no agreement with Semedo as it stands but are said to be likely to act on their interest in the coming weeks.

Birmingham World understands Wolves have offered Semedo a new four-year contract but the defender, named as the club’s captain back in December, is uncertain whether staying at Molineux would be the best career decision. As such, Semedo is yet to make his final call.

It’s understood the 31-year-old has already filmed a farewell video in case he decides to leave. Semedo’s departure wouldn’t necessarily mean a transfer to United, but the Manchester club would undoubtedly make an approach in that instance.

Nelson Semedo sends message to Wolves fans amid transfer speculation

Semedo, signed from Barcelona for around £27.5 million back in 2020, has racked up 182 appearances for Wolves in the past five seasons – more than he’s had for any other club throughout his career. Whatever happens this summer, the 42-time Portugal international will be infinitely thankful to Wanderers and the support from fans.

“For me, it’s an honour to represent this club,” Semedo told Wolves TV after the final game of the season, a 1-1 draw with Brentford. “It’s an honour to lead this club as a captain, it’s a dream come true for me and I just have to thank everybody that believed in me.

“Jeff [Shi], Vitor and his staff as well, and the fans and my teammates – all of them made the job easier, so I just have to thank them and be proud that I was able to be captain of this team.”

On the fans, Semedo added: “They mean a lot because they’ve supported me a lot since I came. I remember when I came, I struggled a lot in my first season, and even despite that, they kept supporting me and pushing me for more. I love them and let’s see what the future brings us, but I wish all the best for them.”

It’s tricky to predict whether Semedo will decide to stay or move on. At Wolves, he would remain captain and maintain the status of being one of the most important players at the football club. Elsewhere, including at United, the right-back would likely just be another player.

As and when any updates emerge for Semedo, Birmingham World will publish them in due course. In the meantime, read on as Wolves are tipped to sign a Brighton & Hove Albion star to replace Cunha.
