Wolverhampton Wanderers will be the club to sign Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid, according to a report from reputable transfer news journalist Fabrizio Romano. It is said the deal has been agreed uponbetween the two clubs and the player, with a medical scheduled.

Julen Lopetegui’s side have dealt a hammer blow to the likes of Aston Villa, Leeds United and Arsenal as they were all hoping to secure the Brazilian forward’s services this January. Romano reports Cunha will be heading to Molineux on loan initially with an option to buy for around €40-50 million (£35-43 million).

The news follows Lopetegui putting out a public display of confidence surrounding the deal in an interview with Marca. When asked about how he hopes to transform the Wanderers in the coming months, the 56-year-old said: “We will try to improve the team in the January market. Cunha is close. The assemblies are built from behind - you have to be solid.”

Cu has struggled for game time with Atletico this season as he has made just 11 appearances in La Liga, totting up a mere 370 minutes. Cunha is yet to score in any competition this term but there is no doubt of his talent as he was a key player last campaign with six goals and six assists in 29 league matches.
