Former Newcastle United and West Ham United midfielder Kevin Nolan questioned the decision to disallow Jean-Philippe Mateta’s stoppage-time goal in Wolves’ 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.

The Premier League rivals were all square after Trevoh Chalobah had put the Eagles ahead only for two goals in five minutes from Jorden Strand Larsen and Joao Gomes snatched the lead for the home side. Marc Guehi levelled matters on 77 minutes as he poked home from close range. Mateta thought he had won it for Palace deep into stoppage time when a he latched onto a loose ball and rolled it into the net but referee Anthony Taylor swiftly gave a freekick to Wolves after Daniel Munoz collided with Jose Sa challenging for the ball - causing the Wolves goalkeeper to spill possession.

However, Nolan believed the goal - which was checked by VAR - should not have been ruled out. He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I must admit I would be really disappointed if I was Crystal Palace. Daniel Munoz made a fair attempt to play the ball, the ball has then come out of Jose Sa's hands and Jean-Philippe Mateta has put it in the net. I don't understand how the referee has given a free-kick to Wolves there. Sa reaches around the leg of Munoz to get to the ball and that is why he drops it. His momentum takes Munoz out and then the fumble happens.”

Speaking about the incident, Wolves boss Gary O’Neil said: "I haven't really watched it back in any great detail. I saw an image of Sa with two hands on the ball, and then the Crystal Palace boy has influenced him enough to make him drop it. I would have to watch it back. There were a few little decisions in the game but nothing really. It looked to me that Jose had control of the ball with two hands on it."

His counterpart Oliver Glasner called it a 50/50 decision, as he said: "I could see it, yes. It's a 50/50 decision. We can see how the referee whistled in the game. He continued many duels, he didn't call for a foul. I think if the referee allowed it then the VAR wouldn't have taken it back.”

The result leaves Wolves bottom of the table on three points after Southampton beat Everton 1-0 at St Mary’s to move to four points while Ipswich Town conceded in the 94th minute to draw 1-1 with Leicester City - leaving them 18th with five points.
