Wolves are not playing coy ahead of the January transfer window with the players they will be in the market for.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil has laid out the club's transfer plans to splurge on a new striker this January despite the red-hot form of Hwang Hee-chan, who bagged a first-half brace against Brentford on Wednesday night.

The South Korean international has already doubled his previous best Premier League goal tally this term, having hit the back of the net 10 times and has stepped up to become his side's talisman under O'Neil. Hwang capitalised on two Brentford errors at the Gtech Community Stadium to fire home in the 14th and 28th minute before being subbed off with a minor injury on the stroke of half time - which O'Neil provided an update on after the game.

After the match, O'Neil was full of praise for his hardworking striker but told the media that the club's priority when the January transfer window opens remains a striker. Explaining the club's positioning, he said: "The points and where we are won't affect January. It's just the position of the club financially and how much we can improve as a group - those will always be the two questions that are asked in transfer windows. Can we improve the group? And, does it fit where we are financially?

"Everyone knows we've been looking for a nine for a while, that will remain through January, hopefully we can do something in that area. There may be a few that have to go out to allow us to do stuff. All questions that will be answered as we progress through January."

Wolves have responded to critics who had earmarked the club for relegation this term with a strong start under O'Neil and appear to be going from strength to strength as the season progresses. Wolves sit 11th in the Premier League table, 10 points clear of the relegation zone and just six points off the top six.

O'Neil said: "I think when I arrived there was quite a bit of noise around it possibly being a difficult season for the club because we were trying to make around £100 million profit in the window for FFP reasons. There are not many teams in the league that are doing that.

"If you look back this time last year to the group that Wolves had and how many points they had, the fact we have so much less depth and experience in the group, the improvements we've made is a credit to everybody. Chany is not even really a number nine and he is doing an incredible job as a nine.

"Everyone just pulling their weight, the two midfielders again excellent today. Lose Neves and Moutinho in the summer and everyone is asking big questions. Mario and Joao have been fantastic. Really pleased with what we've done but we are only halfway through."
