Former Wolves boss sacked after defeat to West Brom

Nuno’s side suffered a 3-1 defeat to Albion on Saturday.

Former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo has been sacked by West Ham United following their defeat to Albion at the weekend.

Like Nuno’s former club Wolves, the Hammers are chasing an immediate return to the Premier League after relegation last season.

They were among the favourites to bounce straight back but have endured a difficult start to the Championship campaign.

Nuno’s side were beaten 3-1 by West Brom on Saturday, with goals from Norwegian midfielder Felix Horn Myhre, Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Callum Styles.

It was their second consecutive home defeat, during which they conceded six goals, and Nuno faced the wrath of supporters at the final whistle.

It was also their third defeat of the season, leaving them eighth in the table and six points adrift of leaders Middlesbrough.

West Ham announced on Tuesday morning that Nuno had been relieved of his duties with immediate effect. Assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa have also left the club.

“Following a thorough review of the start to the EFL Championship season, the board of directors believe that a change is necessary at this time in order to ensure that the club’s objectives and expectations remain on track,” a statement read.

“West Ham United would like to thank Nuno, Rui and Rui for their hard work and commitment during their time at the Club, and wish them all the very best for the future.”

The Hammers are now searching for a new manager ahead of their trip to Cardiff City on Wednesday night.

Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville have been placed in temporary charge of squad preparations for the fixture.

At Wolves, Cesar Peixoto will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Portuguese coach Nuno by guiding his side back to the top flight.

Nuno arrived at Molineux in May 2017 and led Wolves to the Championship title in his first season, collecting 99 points.

He then guided them to consecutive seventh-place finishes in the Premier League before overseeing a memorable Europa League campaign in 2019/20, when they reached the quarter-finals.

Nuno left Wolves in May 2021 and went on to manage Tottenham Hotspur, Al-Ittihad and Nottingham Forest before taking charge at West Ham in September last year.
