Aston Villa have officially announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho.

The former Liverpool playmaker has joined the club on a six-month-loan deal from Barcelona with an option to buy upon its expiry.

The 29-year-old played alongside Villa boss Steven Gerrard during his time at Anfield, and that was a key factor in Coutinho’s decision to join the claret and blue.

After he arrived at Villa Park to finalise the deal yesterday (January 11), Coutinho spoke of his admiration for his new boss and expressed his delight at signing for the club.

Speaking to Aston Villa’s official club website, the Brazilian said: “It’s a pleasure to be here; it’s a great club.

“I spoke a lot with the manager, with Stevie, and he told me about the club and his ambitions. I’m very happy to be here and I’m looking to enjoy my football.”

“He’s someone who I have big admiration for. I hope to do my best here. For sure, I will work hard, and I hope together we can do good work.”

I’m looking forward to meeting the fans, to being on the pitch. I know and I feel that they’re happy that I’m here,” he said.

“I want to repay that on the pitch and enjoy my football. I’m looking forward to being on the pitch.
