Achilles heel again but a different West Brom: Albion talking points after draw with Blackburn

Albion’s draw at Blackburn ended a weekend that might have left fans with a feeling of what might have been.

At half time against Wrexham - it was a case of how much of a boost can this double game weekend give Albion.

As it turned out they came away with two points - but they could be vital ones.

Jonny Drury looks at some key talking points:

The Morrison difference to Ramsay/Mason

It was a poor game, no one can deny it. No one deserved to win, much like Friday which was a fair result.

But one big observation is how James Morrison managed it and how Albion have come away with two points.

No disrespect to Eric Ramsay or Ryan Mason - but how many times have Albion shipped late goals in tight games? A lot, and a lot came under Mason.

Would Albion have picked up two points this weekend under the old regimes? I don’t think they would of.

So it might not be the best, but they have got points when it could have easily been worse.

Same old Achilles heel

Football is a game of fine margins and all those old football cliches - and those margins, certainly in front of goal have stunted Albion for what feels like years.

Under Big Val, Bruce, Corberan, Mowbray and Mason - what were they all missing? That killer touch, to win games.

Some more than others, but Albion have always had chances and not taken them at key moments.

This was the same. Dike on Friday, Heggebo on Monday. No, it isn’t a new Craig David song, it’s Albion’s long suffering story in front of goal.

A matter of inches was the difference between six points and two, but that is nothing new for Albion.

Small changes - big differences

In games like this, you fear the worst sometimes. Under Ramsay you didn’t know what you were going to get. Under Mason, it felt like games could easily get away from Albion.

But under Morrison then is a stronger underbelly, when they’re under the pump they will stand up. And they did.

A 20 minute spell may well have taken the game away from Albion in the past, but they stood firm and restricted Blackburn.

I spoke with Jayson Molumby after and he outlined just how things have changed between managers. I’ll bring you that piece later in the week.

The quality was always there, but there is something different about this Albion.
