Jayson Molumby injury call made as ‘terrific’ signing starts - West Brom predicted XI vs Sheffield Wednesday

West Brom head out on the road this Saturday lunchtime to take on Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Carlos Corberan’s side, leaders of the Championship, will be keen to continue their momentum after a tremendous start to the new campaign. The Baggies - one of just three teams to remain unbeaten - have won five of their opening six matches, conceding merely two goals in the process.

Wednesday, meanwhile, are struggling down in the relegation zone having picked up just four points out of an available 18. It was a dream start as Danny Rohl’s men thrashed Plymouth Argyle 4-0 on the opening weekend but they’ve failed to build on that, losing four of their five outings since.

West Brom will be eager to pile on the misery this Saturday as three points would keep them at the summit of the Championship standings. And if second-placed Sunderland drop points away at Watford, Albion’s lead could be extended.

Corberan named unchanged starting XIs in his first five matches but was forced into his first switch last weekend as Jayson Molumby dropped out through injury and Uros Racic stepped in. Molumby has been working hard to be back available for this one, though, so Corberan has a difficult choice to make.

Including a resolution to that midfield dilemma, here’s the Albion lineup we think will be named at Hillsborough.

GK - Alex Palmer

Palmer, last season’s Championship Golden Glove winner, remarkably has four clean sheets so far this term. He’ll be keen to make that five this weekend.

RB - Darnell Furlong

Furlong has started the new campaign excellently, carrying on his superb form. Nobody is claiming his place at right-back anytime soon.

CB - Semi Ajayi

The Nigerian has made a great start to 2024/25. Mason Holgate will be knocking on the door at some stage but it’s Ajayi’s place to lose.

CB - Kyle Bartley

Bartley, who has donned the captain’s armband in Jed Wallace’s absence, provides leadership and experience at the heart of defence.

LB - Torbjorn Heggem

New signing Heggem is locked in. He could eventually move in-field when Gianluca Frabotta settles in but stays at left-back for now.

CM - Uros Racic

New signing Racic stepped up on his first start of the season with a terrific display against Plymouth. With Jayson Molumby touch and go, Racic surely claims the spot.

CM - Alex Mowatt

Mowatt will play most of the minutes available to him this campaign, without a doubt. Corberan is a big fan of the midfielder in the number eight role.

RW - Tom Fellows

Fellows, now firmly in the fold for England Under-21s, has four assists in six league appearances so far. Corberan will want more of the same.

LW - Karlan Grant

Grant has made a remarkable resurgence this season and deserves to keep on playing. Most Albion fans can’t quite believe what they’re seeing but it’s promising.

CAM - John Swift

Swift should stay in the XI ahead of Wallace, many would suggest. His set pieces are a big plus and he’s been one of the best playmakers in the entire division.

ST - Josh Maja

Maja has started the new campaign in outstanding fashion, netting six goals in as many games. He’s now a guaranteed starter when fit.
