West Brom look set to miss out on one of their transfer targets

West Brom look set to miss out on the free signing of centre-back Mickaël Nadé amid reports from France he is close to agreeing a new contract with Saint-Etienne.

The 25-year-old has officially left Saint-Etienne after his deal ran out at the end of last month but he now looks set to stay put after further talks over a new contract. He has spent three seasons with the club, who were promoted to the French top flight last term with victory over Metz in the promotion play-off final.

Nade has been contracted to Saint-Etienne for his whole senior career, as he progressed through the club’s academy before making his senior debut in 2017. He did have a loan spell with Ligue 2 outfit Quevilly-Rouen back in the 2020-21 season. He has played 79 times for Saint-Etienne.

Last week, French outlet L’Equipe reported both West Brom and their Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday were keeping an eye on the situation after he was offered a new contract. However, GFFN claimed he was set to turn that proposal down. In a new update, Le Progres, in a report relayed by The Sheffield Star, claimed the player rejected offers from English clubs to stay with Saint-Etienne after the parties managed to iron out their differences.

It read: “Negotiations over a four-year contract are being finalized, proof that the parties have finally managed to reach an agreement... At the end of last week, the central defender, disappointed by the financial proposal from the Saint-Etienne management, was considering continuing his career in England.”

West Brom finished fifth in the Championship last season but were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by eventual promotion winners Southampton. So far, they have signed three new players. Midfielder Ousmane Diakite arrived at the Hawthorns at the end of June, signing a two-year deal with the option for another year. Carlos Corberan has already bolstered his defensive unit with the signing of Torbjorn Heggen for a reported fee of £500k while goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith has joined on a free transfer after leaving Derby County.
