The latest news from the Championship as Sunderland miss out on their managerial target.

Sunderland-linked manager Danny Rohl has committed his future to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday by signing a new long-term contract at Hillsborough.

Rohl took charge of the South Yorkshire side in October and inherited a team that were rock bottom of the Championship and seven points adrift of safety after their worst ever start to a league season in the club’s history.

The 35-year-old was able to quickly turn the Owls fortunes around and led them to a 20th place finish, three points clear of Birmingham City, who dropped to the third-tier for the first time in 29 years.

The ex-German assistant manager told the club website: “I am delighted to extend my contract with Sheffield Wednesday. This is a fantastic club that has taken me to heart and I feel exactly the same way.

“I would like to thank the chairman for giving me this opportunity and now we are excited to look forward and can plan ahead together for the new season.”

Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri said: “I am delighted that Danny will be continuing his managerial journey with our club. The impact he made when he joined was immediate and was the foundation for preserving our place in the Championship.

“He has forged a special relationship with our supporters in the short space of time he has been here and now this journey continues. The hard work preparing for next season is already underway, it was important to secure Danny’s services on a well-deserved new contract and I am delighted this is now in place.”

Coventry City land six-goal starlet with ‘great attributes’

West Brom’s promotion rivals Coventry City have kicked off their transfer business with the signing of 20-year-old winger Raphael Borges Rodrigues from Australian A-League side Macarthur.

The youngster, who has signed a four-year contract, struck six goals in 33 matches for the South Western Sydney side and was praised for his performances as the team finished fifth in the league table.

Rodrigues was heavily linked with a move to Rangers but it is the Sky Blues who have secured his signature. Expressing his delight at the deal, manager Mark Robins said: “He is a talented and athletic winger who has just enjoyed an impressive 2023/24 campaign.

“Rapha has some great attributes and a willingness to work and learn, and I’m sure we will enjoy his development during his time with us.”
