Six players set to leave West Brom this summer - including £18m attacker and high earner
Six players are currently on track to leave West Bromwich Albion ahead of the summer transfer window.
West Brom are approaching a huge summer transfer window as they seek to turn around their fortunes following a disappointing end to the 2024/25 season.
The Baggies lost popular head coach Carlos Corberan midway through the campaign and never really recovered. Tony Mowbray was welcomed back for a second stint but it didn’t work out for the 61-year-old as Albion dropped outside the top six and failed in their quest to achieve play-off qualification.
There’s a sense that the next managerial appointment is absolutely pivotal as West Brom can’t afford to linger outside the top six again next season. The summer window is also very important as a squad overhaul is expected.
The months ahead are just as much about deciding what to do with the current crop as it is about looking to bring in new additions. Everyone loves signings, but West Brom aren’t in a position to splash the cash willy-nilly. Sales may be required first to bolster the transfer budget, with academy graduate Tom Fellows one of the likeliest to depart due to interest from the Premier League.
One thing that is for sure, there will be several first-teamers leaving regardless as their contracts reach their conclusion. There are also several loan players who are highly unlikely to be around again next campaign, with decisions to follow for all at The Hawthorns on a temporary basis.
Six players on track to leave West Brom
Three Albion stars will be leaving this summer no matter what as their deals expire on June 30 and there are no plans to renew.
As Mowbray rather handily revealed during his final press conference, winger Grady Diangana is one. The 27-year-old, signed from West Ham United in 2020 for £18 million inclusive of add-ons, held talks over a potential extension but it was decided that an exit was the best solution for all parties.
Mowbray also hinted that John Swift would be on the way out of the exit door, and that will indeed be the case as Albion don’t plan to offer the midfielder a new contract. Swift is among the highest earners at the club and his performances this season just gone weren’t at the level demanded.
Semi Ajayi is the third and final player whose contract is reaching its end this summer. West Brom could do without losing a central defender but the Nigerian has struggled to maintain fitness consistently enough. It’s another one of those where a departure is an inevitability.
Then there are the loanees: Mason Holgate, Will Lankshear and Adam Armstrong. As it stands, West Brom aren’t planning on extending their loans or making approaches for permanent deals. Holgate will go back to Everton, Lankshear will return to Tottenham Hotspur and Armstrong will be reunited with Southampton upon their return to the Championship.
It’s a great shame but none of the three really had the desired impact. Holgate played often enough, racking up over 2,000 minutes in total, but his performances didn’t match the Holgate of old. Lankshear, meanwhile, failed to score in any of his 11 Championship games and Armstrong netted three in 15 league games – a rate below his usual standards.
