Former West Brom midfielder Jonathan Greening is not interested in the vacant York City job. His name emerged as a potential candidate for the National League job following the Minstermen’s shock sacking of John Askey.

However, he has poured cold water on the speculation on his Twitter page (see tweet below). The current Scarborough Athletic boss has labelled York’s treatment of Askey, who guided them to promotion last term, as ‘disgraceful’.

Greening was a hit at West Brom during his playing days and spent six years with the Midlands outfit. He rocked up at the Hawthorns in 2004 and went on to make 224 appearances for the club in all competitions, chipping in with eight goals.

The Scarborough-born man helped the Baggies win promotion to the Premier League in 2008 and stayed for another two years after that before heading out the exit door. He also had spells at Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Fulham and Nottingham Forest.

He hung up his boots in 2017 after a last stint at Tadcaster Albion in non-league and did coaching work at York and with former teammate Richard Cresswell at the i2i Soccer Academy before landing the Scarborough job last year. Greening has since impressed in the dugout and guided the Seadogs to the Northern Premier League title last season.
