West Bromwich Albion were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the second round stage for the second successive season as they lost 1-0 to Derby County on Tuesday evening.

Louie Sibley’s goal early in the first-half was enough to seperate the two sides on a night Albion were well below par.

The game started in proper cup fashion with both sides having a handful of chances on goal in the opening 10 minutes.

Callum Robinson went closest for the Baggies when he turned smartly to get a shot away in the box but was denied by the legs of Joe Wildsmith.

It was Sibley who opened the scoring 10 minutes later, picking up the ball and expertly bending one into the far left corner with Palmer helpless.

Matt Phillips missed a golden opportunity to level things up on the half-hour mark when he headed straight at the Rams keeper from six-yards out.

It could have been worse for the Baggies before the break though had it not been for Palmer superbly tipping over another good strike from Sibley right on the stroke of half-time.

Steve Bruce made a change at the break, bringing on Tom Fellows for Ethan Ingram and moved Taylor Gardner-Hickman to right-back but it didn’t have an instant impact on proceedings.

Derby again started the brighter with Lewis Dobbin and David McGoldrick both going close to doubling the hosts’ advantage.

Albion brought on the cavalry as the half progressed with Jed Wallace, John Swift, Grady Diangana and Karlan Grant all being introduced in the hope of finding an equaliser but it wasn’t to be.

The League One side saw the game out professionally and were worthy winners on a disappointing evening for the Baggies.
