Carlos Corberan has been blown away by the togetherness shown by West Bromwich Albion’s goalkeeping department over recent weeks.

Reaching the crunch point of the 2023/24 campaign, unity within a squad is absolutely vital and the Baggies have it in abundance. It can be tricky to maintain that team cohesion - especially with goalkeepers fighting for one spot - but Corberan has had no issues whatsoever.

Alex Palmer put in an excellent display for West Brom on Sunday, making two or three huge saves to secure a clean sheet. The performance reminded Corberan of the importance of conserving a strong core to a team, and that all starts with the goalkeeper.

It’s not just been recently that Palmer has impressed, though, as the 27-year-old academy graduate had to work hard all season to claim the Championship’s Golden Glove award. Palmer’s 18 clean sheets in 46 games equalled the total set by Leeds United’s Illan Meslier, so both players were handed trophies.

“I didn’t realise this week that Alex received [his Golden Glove]. For me, this is a consequence of unbelievable work from him, from Josh Griffiths, from Ted [Cann] and from Marcos Abad,” Corberan said during Sunday’s post-match press conference.

“I think these four people - including my goalkeeping coach Marcos Abad and the three goalkeepers - have created a level of togetherness that is difficult to find in many clubs in your career.

“I was talking today with Marcos and he showed me a video. Yesterday Marcos was working with a situation you would expect to happen in the games. These situations challenge a lot your goalkeeper.

“I was watching the video. The celebration of Josh Griffiths and Ted when Alex was making the saves yesterday in training, they were feeling like the save of Alex was their save.

“The level of togetherness, quality work that these four people have created together is outstanding.”
