The last time Birmingham City won a trophy as Blues prepare for Peterborough United showdown at Wembley

Birmingham City have a brilliant opportunity to conclude over a decade’s wait for silverware as they take on Peterborough United in the Vertu Trophy final on Sunday afternoon.
Blues head to Wembley Stadium with a mission to put the cherry on the cake of what has been a mighty season. The relegation to League One came as a crushing blow 11 months ago, but it’s ended up being exactly what the club needed as the morale has been lifted significantly by dominating the third tier and booking a rare trip to the home of football.

Hide AdChris Davies had only ever been an assistant manager before taking on the Blues job, so it was a big risk. His appointment has turned out to be a superb decision, though, as Birmingham have won a record 38 matches in all competitions this campaign, including a record 18 league victories on home soil. He’s also guided his side to a cup final.
When was the last time Birmingham won a trophy?
Bluenoses will remember very fondly the last time they clinched silverware of any kind, back in 2011 as they completed a surprise 2-1 victory over Arsenal at Wembley to lift the League Cup.
Nikola Zigic opened the scoring for Blues with a close-range header from a Sebastian Larsson corner before Robin van Persie restored parity for Arsenal with a stunning volley from an Andrey Arshavin cross. Obafemi Martins then scored Birmingham’s dramatic winner, capitalising on a mix-up between Wojciech Szczesny and Laurent Koscielny by tapping into an open net.
Blues were the heavy underdogs but worked their socks off to beat Arsene Wenger’s Gunners, securing their first major trophy since 1963 - also a League Cup. It was also the first time they’d won anything since a Football League Trophy crown in 1995.

Hide AdBirmingham have never won an FA Cup but they did reach two finals in 1931 and 1956, while there were consecutive defeats in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup final in 1960 and 1961. Blues have won the the Championship on four occasions, in 1892/93, 1920/21, 1947/48 and 1954/55.
Vertu Trophy opportunity presents itself
Albeit nowhere near as significant as the League Cup, the Vertu Trophy - the sponsored name for the Football League Trophy - can still be considered important. Dominating League One in record-breaking fashion and winning an extra piece of silverware in the same season is quite an achievement to boast.
A day out to Wembley is enjoyable enough but adding a prize to the trophy cabinet would be extra special. Blues have had to work hard to get to this point, too, with seven matches played to reach the final, six of which were wins.
Davies has always maintained that League One is the priority but as promotion will likely be wrapped up by the weekend, the full focus can then turn to the Vertu Trophy. What a day Birmingham fans have in store.
