A former Brighton star and current Rangers ace could make a shock move to League One.

Birmingham City are reportedly weighing up an audacious summer approach for Rangers star Connor Goldson.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion defender saw a reduction in Rangers game time toward the end of last season. Gers boss Philippe Clement first dropped Goldson in April before he suffered a knee injury in training that ended his 2023/24 campaign.

Birmingham, ambitious in doing so, are keen to offer the defender n a route back to English football. The Scottish Sun reports new Blues manager Chris Davies has named Goldson as a priority target as he seeks to reinforce a new-look back three at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.

Goldson has been a tremendous servant at Ibrox Stadium, with 309 appearances, 23 goals and 15 assists to his name in six years since signing for around £3 million. The defender, who can play centre-back or right-back, was previously at Brighton.

It’s been a particularly impressive career from Goldson so far as he suffered an unexpected setback in 2017. The Englishman was told he had a potentially life-threatening heart condition and had to undergo surgery before thankfully making a full recovery.

Goldson, at Brighton at the time of his scare, was understandably concerned he may never be able to play professional football again. But he’s since made a tremendous recovery and racked up a total of 195 top-flight appearances, with 192 in Scotland and three in the Premier League.

Rangers must make Goldson call amid Birmingham interest

It awaits to be seen if Rangers would be willing to sell Goldson this summer but Clement axing him from the starting lineup in April suggests a move could be possible, albeit at a sizeable cost.

With two years left on his deal, Goldson certainly won’t be available on the cheap. Meanwhile, Dutch centre-back Mike Eerdhuijzen is already in talks over a £2.1 million move to Blues.
