A highly-anticipated Birmingham City transfer is reaching its climax.

Birmingham City midfielder Jordan James is one step closer to completing his move to Rennes, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano last week broke the news that a bid from Rennes had been accepted for James, and now he has provided an update. He posted on Monday (August 12) that a medical was ongoing for the 20-year-old after a deal had been agreed last week.

James didn’t feature for Blues in their 1-1 draw with Reading on the opening day of the League One season. Birmingham have Charlton Athletic next in the Carabao Cup, and the Welshman will play no part.

When asked on the latest about James, manager Chris Davies in his post-match press conference said: “I can’t give you anything definitive on that but it looks like it’s heading in that direction, yes.”

Last week, James was praised by the manager for how he had dealt with transfer speculation. Speaking to BBC Radio West Midlands, Davies said: "He's shown a brilliant attitude.

"Every day JJ has worked hard and there has been no difference in him to all the other players. "That is testament to him as there has been a lot of noise and speculation around him. "I spoke about this with him right from day one. But, for such a young man, to deal with it all with the composure he has I've been really impressed."

According to the BBC's report, Birmingham City will get £8m for James. It is higher than the €4.5 million plus bonuses bid that Tutto Mercato Web said Atalanta had made in the January transfer window.

If all goes to plan, James could make his league debut for Rennes against Lyon on Sunday, August 18. He would be following in the footsteps of his international teammate Joe Rodon, who had a loan spell at the Roazhon Park in 2022/23.
