Jay Stansfield responds to Birmingham City teammate's 'brawl' with Wrexham players

Jay Stansfield has responded to the fracas that contributed to Birmingham City teammate Krystian Bielik’s sending off against Wrexham.

Birmingham went down to 10 men for the final stages of their 3-1 win over Wrexham as Bielik was shown two yellow cards in the space of five minutes.

Blues’ captain lacked composure as he was first booked in a confrontation with Wrexham duo Paul Mullin and James McClean before lunging cynically into a challenge on Tom O’Connor a few phases of play later. Bielik was foolish not to calm himself after his first yellow and paid the price, receiving a red and in turn a suspension for Saturday’s tough clash away at Rotherham United.

Stansfield wasn’t on the pitch at the time of the intense fracas that riled up Bielik but he had a great view down on the bench. From the press box, it seemed to be an idiotic few minutes for the Blues skipper but Stansfield sees it through a different lens.

“I think everyone in this league is very competitive, everyone is fighting for what each club wants,” Stansfield told BirminghamWorld in the post-match press conference.

“I think it shows the character from both clubs and what such a big game it was. We came off with Krys [Bielik] getting sent off but it’s a football game and there are always going to be moments like that.”

Stansfield’s certainly not wrong about the competitive nature of his Birmingham counterpart as Bielik was a force to be reckoned with all night long, leading from the back. The former Poland international is always a physical presence and he rarely stands for any stick from opponents.

Passion may be great but looking at the bigger picture, Bielik may have to tone down his behaviour a little in the future. After all, when suspensions are on the line which cause missed fixtures, it hurts the team.
