Ex-Birmingham City player Gary McSheffrey has been sacked by Doncaster Rovers. The League Two club have decided to part company with the 40-year-old after their slow start to the new season, as announced on their official club website.

McSheffrey landed his first managerial role with the Yorkshire outfit in December last year on an initial interim basis before landing the full-time job. His side were relegated from League One last term and were aiming for an immediate promotion back to the third tier.

However, they are currently sat in 12th place in the table after picking up 21 points from their opening 14 games. They were beaten 3-0 away at Carlisle United over the weekend.

Their chairman David Blunt has said: “While results so far in Sky Bet League Two have been largely positive, there has been a growing concern over the standard of performances in matches and a lack of progress between games.

“We feel this is threatening our ability to achieve our stated goals for the season. We have also been disappointed that our wishes for a particular style of play and overall identity, which were clearly laid out over the summer, have not been brought into effect in competitive matches.”

Birmingham days

McSheffrey played for Birmingham from 2006 to 2010 and made 96 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with 20 goals. The former England youth international helped the Blues win promotion to the Premier League in 2009 and also had loan spells away at Nottingham Forest and Leeds United during his time at St. Andrew’s.
