Birmingham City supporters are fearing “this could be the end” of their Championship status after suffering last-gasp heartbreak against Millwall.

The Blues looked set to earn a vital point on the road until disaster struck in the 89th minute. Tottenham Hotspur loanee Japhet Tanganga headed into the bottom from a corner to snatch all three points at the Den - piercing a dagger through the heart of Birmingham’s survival hopes.

Defeat leaves Mark Venus’ side a point above the bottom three with 10 games remaining. A trip to Queens Park Rangers is next for City but fans are already beginning to lose hope.

One fan blasted the “pathetic” performance in the capital - and hit out at referee Darren Bond for failing to award a penalty. With the scoreline level, Joe Bryan appeared to bring down Jay Stansfield in the area but the protests were ignored.

“I’m sorry but that was pathetic Blues,” the angry social media post read. “(We) should have had a penalty but my god they’ve got to work harder than they did in that first half. Why subtitue Pritchard when he was starting to play well? This could be the end.”

A response wondered what could have been on a day when Birmingham wasted several chances. The fan wrote: “Had a few good chances early in the second half. A wasted opportunity today.”

Hundreds of supporters’ posts followed a similar tone after watching their side crumble in the dying embers. City followers are beginning to get “nervous” about the prospect of League One football for the first time since 1995.

“Jesus,” the Blues fan posted. “(It’s) not looking good at all. We don't seem to have the players for the fight, quality or the luck. Scary end to the season. Unsure why certain players start. Nervous times!”
