Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion both faced a huge transfer blow today with Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle opting for a move to Championship rivals, Stoke City.

The forward has been heavily linked with a move to both West Midlands clubs over the last fortnight but has instead chose to join the Potters on a two-year deal.

Both Blues and Albion remain keen to add new blood to their respective forward departments and Gayle would have been the perfect addition for either.

The 32-year-old has 59 goals in 100 Championship appearances and has proved lethal at this level in the past.

Birmingham are yet to replace last year’s loanee Lyle Taylor whilst the Baggies, away from Daryl Dike, are short of ‘natural striker’ options at the Hawthorns.

There’s plenty of time still left for both to add a new face or two in those areas but those of Gayle’s proven quality will be hard to come by.

Dwight Gayle:

“I’m buzzing to be here and I can’t wait to get started now.

“There were a few parties that were interested but for me it was about finding a club that was right for me and after speaking to the gaffer and the coaches I heard everything I wanted to hear.”

Stoke City manager Michael O’Neill:

“Dwight’s track record, particularly in the Championship, is exceptional and there were a number of clubs chasing him so we are really delighted he has chosen to join us.”
