Despite a number of off-field issues, Birmingham City enjoyed what was statistically their best Championship season for over half a decade in 2022/23.
Fans were often the 12th man for Blues as they guided them to a 17th-placed finish and a points total of 53. Blues were cheered on with plenty of noise from the Birmingham faithful throughout the campaign.
The news of Tom Wagner’s proposed takeover of the club has provided fans with some much needed optimism after a difficult few years at St Andrew’s. But there have certainly been some other positive moments throughout the season.
With Blues’ season now over, we’ve decided to take a look at the club’s biggest moments from the 2022/23 season - Let’s take a look:
1. Bowyer departs and Eustace takes charge
Head coach Lee Bowyer was sacked by the club just before the season began after 16 months in charge at St Andrew’s. He was replaced by the Solihull-born former Republic of Ireland assistant coach John Eustace. Fans had mixed feelings over Eustace’s appointment initially
2. First win
Przemyslaw Placheta’s scored the winning goal against Huddersfield Town as Blues got their first win of the new campaign and their first competitive win under their new boss in the second game of the season
3. West Brom 2-3 Birmingham City
Blues’ derby day win over local rivals West Brom was one of their best performances of the season. A Scott Hogan hatrick was enough to see off the Baggies in September. What an away day that was
4. Blues beat Reading to move up to 7th
Blues’ 3-2 win over Reading in December meant they had lost just 3 in 16 league games. The impressive run of form saw Eustace’s men move up to 7th and even had the fans dreaming of an unexpected promotion push. It was a result which you felt had proved many of Eustace’s doubters wrong at the time
