Birmingham City could terminate transfer as League One club break promise
Chris Davies could decide to recall a Birmingham City star from his loan at Burton Albion.
Birmingham will be considering terminating wonderkid midfielder Romelle Donovan’s loan at Burton this January as the fellow League One club haven’t fulfilled their promises.
The Brewers assured Donovan would be a regular starter throughout his loan spell but that’s not been the case so far. The 17-year-old has accumulated merely 324 minutes across all competitions this term, with just 176 of those coming in League One.

Davies knew Donovan wouldn’t get guaranteed game time at Blues this season and so a loan away made the most sense. Birmingham could soon decide Burton are no longer the right destination for such a move, though, given Donovan’s restricted experience so far.
First brought into the senior Blues fold by Wayne Rooney at the end of 2023, the versatile attacking midfielder has made 10 appearances for the club so far. The teenager definitely has the potential to become a key player one day due to his impressive footwork, vision and finishing but he’s far from the finished product.
It’ll be interesting to see if Birmingham do indeed recall Donovan from his loan this January. If they do, a decision awaits whether to let him return to Blues’ youth setup or move on to a different League One club. League Two could be another option to ensure Donovan can acquire key player status.
