Birmingham City 'want' to sign new defender in January transfer window

Birmingham City are looking to flex their financial muscles in January.

Birmingham City’s high spending summer transfer window was well documented - and they are not done splashing the cash just yet. According to journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon, the Blues are looking to sign a defender in January to add depth to their squad.

City are looking to earn promotion from League One at the first time of asking - given the vast swathes of money that they have shelled out, anything less than this would be seen as a failure. To help give their chances a boost, they want to bring more defensive options to the team.

Currently, Birmingham are second in the League One table with 30 points from 13 games - they also have a game in hand over league leaders Wycombe Wanderers. As things stand, they have won nine, drawn three and lost one.

Do Birmingham City need a new defender?

While the Blues seem intent on signing a new defender, it does not seem like a necessity at this point in the season. With just 12 goals conceded in 13 League One games, only Wrexham and Exeter City have let fewer in.

Furthermore, they have plenty of depth at the back. They have four centre halves in their squad - Dion Sanderson, Krystian Bielik, Christoph Klarer and Ben Davies. In the full back roles, however, they are looking somewhat thinner.

Birmingham have Lee Buchanan and Alex Cochrane who can play at left back, while Ethan Laird and Alfons Sampsted at right back. Despite this, both Buchanan and Laird are currently injured - making their full back options sparse.

Therefore, if the Blues are to sign a defender in the January transfer window, it may be in their best interest to snap up an adaptable full back who is capable of playing on either the right or left side of defence.
