Former Birmingham City star wants manager's job in England
Coming to a ground near you? After nearly 10-years in his first senior management job, the ex-Blues man wants to coach in England.
Former Birmingham City midfielder Aliou Cisse is ‘targeting’ a return to England for his next job.
The 48-year-old has found himself out of work since it was decided by the Senegalese FA that they would not be renewing his contract, having spent nearly 10-years in the post.
He was appointed head coach after impressing on an interim basis. He took them to the 2018 World Cup before reaching the Africa Cup of Nations final in 2019. Senegal kept him on and in 2021 they won the AFCON for the first time, before reaching the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup losing to England.
Despite his contract expiring in August, he was kept on for qualifying for the 2025 AFCON, picking up four points from two games. Senegal have since had Papa Thiaw in charge, and twice beaten Malawi, and also beaten Burkina Faso and Burundi.
In a post on Twitter, Football Insider’s most influential reporter Pete O'Rourke said: " Former Senegal boss Aliou Cisse is targeting a move to England for his next managerial role. Cisse, 48, is currently out of work after surprisingly losing his job with Senegal last month after nearly 10 years in charge.
“The former Birmingham and Portsmouth midfielder is now eyeing his next manager’s role in England and his representative Willie McKay is seeking opportunities for the ex-Paris Saint Germain man.“
At the moment, the current managerial vacancies in England are the Leicester City job after they sacked Steve Cooper on Sunday. Cardiff City and Coventry City are looking for a new boss in the Championship, whilst bottom side Burton Albion are also still looking.
The 48-year-old had a playing spell in the League with Birmingham City and Portsmouth during the early 2000s. He had joined Blues after captaining Senegal to the quarter finals of the 2002 World Cup.
He made 36 appearances across all competitions for Birmingham, helping them to 13th and 10th placed finishes. Cisse was later allowed to join Premier League rivals Portsmouth for a reported £300,000. He made 24 appearances for the South Coast outfit, before returning to France to sign for Sedan, and then retiring with Nimes in 2009.
