Aston Villa’s John McGinn opens up on relationship with Steven Gerrard

The midfielder spoke about his new manager, making a surprise admission.

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has opened up on his relationship with Steven Gerrard, and believes the pair have similar playing traits.

His jovial personality off the pitch, and his passion on the pitch have cemented McGinn as a fan favourite since his move south from Hibernian. Performing well under multiple managers at Villa, keeping his place under new regimes, it’s clear to see why so many manager’s have put their trust in the Scot.

His rare absence is noticeable, with Villa going down many notches in their attacking intensity, missing the tenacity in the press and also some technical ability.

Due to the traits the make him so important, it has been rumoured that Gerrard wants to build his team around McGinn, with new signings such as Lucas Digne and Phillipe Coutinho recently coming in.

And, as rumours of a transfer north to Manchester United intensify, McGinn had this say about Gerrard, who has been at the club for just over three months.

Speaking exclusively to the Express and Star, McGinn highlighted the similarities about himself and Gerrard, saying: “What we do have in common is we both play or played in midfield and we both want to win.

“It is an easy relationship from there, I am just trying to learn from him and Gary McAllister and trying to improve as a player.

“I still have a lot to learn and we are working closely together to try and get the best for the club and myself”

Gerrard also spoke on McGinn, and was full of praise saying: “I love John McGinn, I love the person, the character the player.”

Gerrard was one of the Premier League’s best ever midfielders, known for his long-shooting, passing range and passion. Widely regarded as one of the best midfielders of all time, held in the same regard as Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Frank Lampard, his trust in McGinn says an awful lot about the player.
