Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has been pictured in France this week as he looks to get some personal scouting in early ahead of the summer transfer window.

The former Liverpool captain was spotted in the director’s box for the clash between Marseille and Nantes with RMC Sport reporting that he was there to get a front row seat to watch holding midfielder, Boubacar Kamara.

Villa’s CEO Christian Purslow and Sporting Director Johan Lange were also photographed alongside Gerrard at the Orange Velodrome which points in the direction of this being a real serious target of the manager’s.

Defensive midfield remains the number one priority for Villa this summer and even if they were to land the signature of Kamara, it doesn’t take away from the potential of another incoming of the same mould.

Who is Boubacar Kamara?

Boubacar Kamara is a French footballer that currently plays in France with Ligue 1 side, Marseille.

Kamara’s entire professional career has been spent at the Orange Velodrome to date. Making 163 appearances for the Phocaeans across the last five years, he’s also tallied up four goals and six assists.

He has represented France at international level from u17s all the way up to u21s but is yet to be capped by the men’s team.

How old is Boubacar Kamara?

Born November 3rd, 1999, Kamara is 22-years-old.

What position does Boubacar Kamara play?

Kamara plays predominantly as a holding midfielder though he has been deployed as a centre-back over 50 times during his professional career with Marseille. He also has a handful of appearances at full-back which shows just how versatile he is.

What can Boubacar Kamara bring to Aston Villa?

The 22-year-old fits the mould of exactly the type of player Villa are after. He’s young yet has bags of experience at an elite level and also has so much room to improve even further.

His ability to play a number of positions will attract the eyes of a number of clubs but there’s no doubt he would be purchased as predominantly a holding midfielder for Villa.

It’s the number one priority for Gerrard and has been that way since he arrived in January. Midfield has been a huge weak link in this talented Villa side with nobody really being able to grab a game by the scruff of its neck, especially in adversity.

Kamara would be an instant starter for the claret & blue but his signature would not mean the end of the hunt for a midfielder with a fresh bid for Yves Bissouma still expected regardless of any other additions.

The fact he is still so young also brings with it the potential for a huge profit further down the line if his career was to take off upon arrival at Villa Park.
