Aston Villa captain Tyrone Mings has hailed the team’s youngsters following Villa’s 1-0 victory over Brisbane Roar on Wednesday.

The winning goal came straight out of the claret and blue academy as 19-year-old Kaine Kesler-Hayden provided a pin-point pass for hot-shot forward Cameron Archer to finish sublimely.

While several Championship clubs would be interested in signing the 20-year-old striker, who impressed at Preston last season, Villa boss Steven Gerrard has previously dismissed the idea of another loan move for the 2022/23 campaign. Gerrard may, of course, change his mind, yet Sunderland would face strong competition if they tried to sign the youngster. While several Championship clubs would be interested in signing the 20-year-old striker, who impressed at Preston last season, Villa boss Steven Gerrard has previously dismissed the idea of another loan move for the 2022/23 campaign. Archer in particular has been gaining a number of plaudits following his loan spell at Preston North End last season but Kesler-Hayden’s display along with the assured performance of others such as Tim Iroegbunam and Ben Chrisene showed that there’s more than one to get excited about moving forward.

It may only be pre-season but their performances aren’t going unnoticed by the fans and the same can be said for their more experienced teammates.

Speaking to VillaTV after the 1-0 win, Mings says ‘long may it continue’ in regards to the exciting youngsters knocking on the first-team door.

“It can be very hard as a young lad sometimes coming in and to be thrust into the team and to go out and express yourself,” explained the captain.

“Sometimes you find yourself playing within yourself or being a little bit safe but I think the youngsters we’ve got are full of confidence.

“Both have had good loans so credit to that department because they’ve come back and they look like professionals that are ready to step into our team or are pushing very, very hard.

“As you’ve seen with JJ [Jacob Ramsey], weve got a fantastic pathway from the academy for players to come through and get minutes in the first team so long may it continue.”

There’s now just one game left on Villa’s pre-season tour of Australia before they head back to Europe and that comes in the shape of Manchester United.

And whilst the game officially will be labelled as a friendly, Mings adds that everyone in the dressing room will be wanting to win that match.

“I think winning is a habit and winning is a habit that we want to keep hold of for as long as possible,” he said.

“We’ll go into the game Saturday - of course it’s pre-season, of course it’s a friendly but we want to win games and we want to continue to win so we’ve managed to do that tonight and we’ll try and do that again on Saturday.”
