Aston Villa had to settle for a point from last night’s match with Nottingham Forest after Ashley Young’s 22nd minute equaliser cancelled out an early goal from Emmanuel Dennis.

Neither side was able to find the net again in the following 68 minutes and the result was enough to lift the hosts off the bottom of the Premier League table while Steven Gerrard’s side remained 16th with just nine points from their nine matches so far and only two wins. What was concerning was that the visitors had the lion’s share of possession in the match but only managed two attempts on target throughout and there were no punches pulled in the Sky Sports studio in the aftermatch.

Manchester United icon Roy Keane was working alongside fellow pundit Jamie Carragher for the Monday Night Football coverage and gave a scathing review of Villa’s players in his typical, no-nonsense style. The former midfielder says that the current crop of Villa players “lack bottle” and that he “couldnt’ believe how bad” the attacking players were.

He said: “They’ve got no bottle for that Villa team. For all their so-called attacking players they didn’t do enough to get a result and they’ll be kicking themselves. Overall, I thought it was a really poor game but credit to Forest, they’ve got something out of the game, maybe something to build on, but it was a real lack of quality from both teams. When you’re near the bottom of the table you’ve got to show something, and Forrest did tonight, but from Villa’s point of view I couldn’t believe how bad their attacking players were.”

Next up for Aston Villa will be the visit of Chelsea to Villa Park in the Premier League on Sunday. The Blues are in Champions League action against AC Milan at Stamford Bridge tonight but go into that match on the back of an eight game unbeaten run while Graham Potter is yet to taste defeat as their head coach and has won all of his league fixtures in charge so far including a convincing 3-0 win over managerless Wolves at the weeknd.
