Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has revealed the reason behind Emiliano Buendia dropping to the bench against Brighton & Hove Albion, claiming that is was simply down to tactics rather than the Argentine doing anything wrong.

After struggling in his early days following his big money move from Norwich City, Buendia has seen a sharp up-turn in form since Gerrard’s arrival and has arguably been Villa’s best and most consistent forward player in that time.

His recent positive displays didn’t stop him from being the victim of a change of formation last time out but the manager admits he could come back into the fold this weekend.

“You word it as being dropped, I word it as something different tactically,” explained Gerrard on the decision to take Buendia out of the squad.

“We decided to go with two number nines rather than two number tens so it wasn’t a dropping on the back of a bad performance or him being in a bad moment, it was what we thought was best for the team for the particular challenge in front of us that was Brighton.

“Buendia has trained well all week, he’s been positive around the place like he always is and he’s pushing to be included in tomorrow’s game.”
