Serie A giants Roma are reportedly considering a move for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The 24-year-old Brazilian has been a consistent presence in Villa sides since he joined the club in a £15million move from Manchester City in the summer of 2019.

Making over 100 appearances over the last three seasons, Luiz’s form earned him a maiden call-up to the Brazil senior squad and he made his full international debut as a substitute in a 3-0 friendly win over South Korea in November 2019.

The midfielder has been linked with a return to Manchester City and a move to Arsenal during his time at Villa Park - but reports in the Italian press have now suggested Roma could be his next destination this summer.

The recent arrival of Marseille star Boubacar Kamara has opened up the possibility that Luiz could be allowed to depart Villa according to reports in Carriere dello Sport.

After watching his side become the first ever winners of the Europa Conference League on Thursday night, Roma manager Jose Mourinho is said to be keen to strengthen his options in midfield.

Arsenal star Granit Xhaka has been a long-term target but the report now suggests the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager is turning his attention towards a possible move for Luiz.

The Brazil international will move into the final 12 months of his current deal this summer and Villa manager Steven Gerrard spoke about Luiz’s future early last month and admitted that a decision will be taken during the close-season.

Speaking ahead of the 2-1 defeat at Wolves, he said: “He’s (Luiz) got 12 months left. That’s where we’re at. We haven’t analysed that individual’s situation in isolation, if you like.

“All of the individuals, we’ll speak about from now until the end of the season and we’ll deal with each case when needs be but not right now. The priority now is Wolves.

“We want to keep all of our good players at the club.

“For us, to take this where we want to take it, where the ambitions are, we want all of our remaining players to stay but, at the same time, we’ve got to respect that everyone’s different i.e. Phil’s (Coutinho) on loan, i.e. Dougie’s got a year left, i.e. one or two might be close to signing new deals.

“We’ll just analyse each case as and when needs be.”
