Newcastle United could be plotting a deadline day move for Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett according to reports.

The Premier League’s latest big spenders have already added Kieran Trippier to their defence and had a fee agreed for Brighton’s Dan Burn but are seemingly not done yet having registered interest in the claret & blues’ 2021 players’ player of the year.

The 26-year-old quickly fell down the pecking order following the arrival of Lucas Digne and though manager Steven Gerrard recently reinforced his desire to have two players for each position - the signing of Calum Chambers who is more than capable there as well as Ashley Young who is no stranger to left-back - may factor in any potential decision.

With how Gerrard has carried himself in his early days as Villa Head Coach, though, it would come as a surprise if he allows Targett to leave without having assurances of bringing another face through the door.

This would throw a spanner in the works of what looks an already busy day at Villa Park.

Gerrard and his staff are still trying incredibly hard to bring in a defensive midfielder before the window shuts so having to work at bringing in another potential target would be tough.

But this is deadline day and with the ambition that these Villa owners are showing - busy ones like this may well be the norm going forward.
