Would you look at the time? It’s transfer deadline day already and Aston Villa could potentially have a busy day ahead of them.

With five new faces already through the door at Villa Park this January, including the standout signings of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne - it’s fair to say it’s been a pretty successful month for Steven Gerrard and his staff.

If the scouser has anything to do with it though, business won’t be done just yet.

A central midfielder has been on the top of the former Liverpool captain’s bucket list for some time and whilst one or two seemingly now appear out of the equation - this is football and things change rapidly, especially on deadline day.

Yves Bissouma

Brighton’s Bissouma has been on Villa’s shortlist for some time.

The 25-year-old ran the game earlier in the season at Villa Park when the two sides met and I remember myself thinking he was the best player on the pitch by some way.

If that performance did anything it just reinforced Villa’s desire to get him wearing the claret & blue in the near future.

Both Brighton and Villa are said to still be way off in their valuation of the player but those issues can quickly be extinguished as time ticks on on January 31.

Rodrigo Bentancur

Juventus and Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur’s move to Villa Park looked all but done as of last week but things have since derailed with a transfer seemingly unlikely.

Gerrard is a big admirer of the 24-year-old whom was also given a glowing reference by fellow countryman and international teammate Luis Suarez following news of a potential move to the Premier League became public.

But within the last 72 hours or so things broke down with Villa being unable to agree terms with Bentancur.

The Juventus midfielder is now linked with a move to Villa’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur but it is possible that things could get back on track as quickly as they came off it today.

Kalvin Phillips

Kalvin Phillips, a long term target of Aston Villa according to The Athletic, is a possibility before the end of the window.

The Leeds United midfielder is currently out injured but it hasn’t halted Villa’s admiration for the 26-year-old.

He would take some prizing away though. Phillips has spent his entire career with his boyhood club, helping them earn promotion back to the Premier League and earning himself an international call up in the process. Sound familiar?

But as we all know, money talks. If Villa can offer him the right deal and he feels he can better his career in the west midlands, anything is possible.

Surprise addition

It appeared to be a one off when Villa landed the signature of Danny Ings under the noses of absolutely everyone back in the summer but they only went and did it again recently when they added Arsenal defender Calum Chambers.

No rumours of a potential move, no ‘in the know’ Twitter accounts breaking the news before the club - just boom - a signing announcement from the club themselves.

They’ve done it twice now - once in the last two windows. At this point it wouldn’t be a surprise, to see a surprise at some point before 23:00.
