The winger who many had high hopes for, has fallen down the pecking order considerably under Ruben Amorim and has reportedly been told he can leave Old Trafford this summer despite previously looking like a star in the making under Erik ten Hag.

The eight-time Argentine international was the subject of rampant speculation linking him with moves to the likes of Napoli, Atletico Madrid and even rivals Chelsea throughout January but remained to see through what was one of Manchester United’s darkest chapters in their recent history.

FourFourTwo is among a number of outlets suggesting that Aston Villa could be Garnacho’s new club next season. The Villans narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification after losing to the Red Devils on the last day of the season and are believed to think that they can once again unlock Garnacho’s potential as the 21-year-old strives for a place in Argentina’s World Cup squad next summer.

United are believed to be seeking a fee in the region of £50m for Garnacho but could be forced to sell to a direct rival due to the youngster’s preference of playing in Europe to prioritise his World Cup chances as opposed to taking a big pay-day out in Saudi Arabia.

The club need sales to facilitate change at Old Trafford and could make some concessions with Garnacho when it comes to the price tag to help facilitate a number of key priority signings across the pitch, according to Caught Offside.

Should Aston Villa target Alejandro Garnacho this summer?

Aston Villa proved they are capable of getting the best out of an underperforming Manchester United star in January when they persuaded Marcus Rashford to join the club on loan during the second half of last season. Had it not been for the England international’s reported excessive wage demands, that deal would have very likely been completed on a permanent with a reported £40m agreement already being in place.

Garnacho like Rashford, is a left-sided winger, with the ability to run at defenders, create chances, draw fouls and most significantly contribute goals and assists. He has an overall record of 26 goals and 22 assists in 144 matches for the Red Devils, has been capped eight times for the World Cup holders, and has already won a league Cup, an FA Cup, reached a Europa League final - and formed part of Argentina’s Copa America winning team.

For the right price, Garnacho would represent a great piece of business for Aston Vila, particularly as talks intensifies about Leon Bailey potentially departing with Fenerbahce showing interest. However, the one stumbling block at the moment is likely to be the club’s ongoing PSR constraints, with the club likely needing to sell once again despite letting go of players like Jhon Duran and Douglas Luiz in recent windows.

The intriguing Man Utd and Aston Villa swap deal that could take place

PSR can often force teams to make decisions that make great sense from a financial standpoint but less so in terms of progressing as a football club and challenging for major honours. This has been epitomised by many sales in the last 12 months such as Elliot Anderson from Newcastle to Nottingham Forest and Cole Palmer from Manchester City to Chelsea to name a couple.

The latest that could be considered by Aston Villa is reportedly the sale of Emiliano Martinez, with many journalists including Fabrizio Romano suggesting the World Cup winner could leave Villa Park to complete a move to Manchester United.

The Red Devils are in need of a goalkeeper, with Ruben Amorim appearing to lose patience with Andre Onana after the goalkeeper’s poor showing last term. However, like Villa, they face constraints when it comes to PSR particularly if they are to proceed with their efforts to land Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford for a reported £65m.

This could potentially lead to a swap deal of some sorts involving United and Aston Villa, with World Cup winner Martinez moving to Carrington and wonderkid Garnacho moving in the opposite direction.

From a PSR standpoint with Garnacho being 11 years youngster it’s a deal that’d likely suit Villa depending on how the deal’s structured due to the Argentine’s undoubted potential to blossom and his sell on value if successful. Meanwhile, for United, it wouldn’t be the best money move in terms of profit, but could prove prevalent on the pitch as they’d be acquiring one of the very best shot-stoppers in the business.

It’s a deal which would leave both with plenty to think about both on the pitch and on the balance sheet, and it’d be intriguing to see how both clubs would look to structure it but at this stage could be deal that the two may look to make.
