Jill Scott has retired from professional football at the age of 35. The midfielder, who played her final game in professional club football at Aston Villa, has called time on her 18-year professional career after winning Euro 2022 in the summer.

Let’s take a look at the five most capped Lionesses to play for Aston Villa.

5. Hannah Hampton - 2 caps

It might be a surprise to see Hannah Hampton on this list having only played twice for the Lionesses, but the 21-year old makes it. Born in Birmingham, the goalkeeper started her career at city rivals Birmingham before making the move to Villa in 2021. Recently part of the winning squad at Euro 2022 - despite not making an appearance - Hampton has plenty of time ahead of her to add to her tally of international appearances.

4. Gemma Davison - 16 caps

A little bit cheeky, this, as Gemma Davison only made three appearances after joining Villa last season on a short term contract. Davison has 16 caps for England though, the most recent coming in January 2017. More well known for her multiple stints with Arsenal and Chelsea, the winger has won multiple trophies, including ten top-flight titles. The 35-year old now plays for Watford in the Women’s National League - Southern.

3. Rachel Daly - 57 caps

Only recently signing for Villa after her role in the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 victory, Rachel Daly has 57 caps for England despite spending the majority of her career playing in the MLS. Scoring eight goals in that time, Daly can be deployed as a left-back or as a forward, and played every game in England’s success in the summer. At just 30, she has plenty of time to add to her caps in the future, and Villa will hope that she can recreate her performances from the international stage for the club this season.

2. Anita Asante - 71 caps

Amassing 71 caps for England, Asante retired from professional football at the end of last season after spending the final two years of her career playing for Villa. Asante made 35 appearances in the claret and blue from the heart of defence. Her 71 caps came over the course of a 14 year international career, in which she played in four international tournaments and was part of the team that finished runners-up in Euro 2009. Since retiring from football, Asante has worked as the first-team coach at Women’s Championship outfit Bristol City.

Far and away the most-capped player to play for Villa, Jill Scott retired yesterday at the age of 35 after playing her final club game at Aston Villa. More famous for her stints at Everton and Manchester City, Scott was a staple in the international fold over a 16-year period, racking up 161 caps, second only to Fara Williams. Scott made 7 appearances in the claret and blue after joining on loan from City in January, and helped the club comfortably avoid relegation from the WSL. Scoring 27 goals for England, the most recent in England’s 4-0 victory over Switzerland in a warm-up game for the Euro 2022 tournament, Scott will be remembered as a legend of the English women’s game, and retires with a glittering trophy cabinet.
