Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski is now ‘unlikely’ to move to Aston Villa according to reports, with Everton now the most likely destination for the 29-year-old.

Tarkowski will be available on a free transfer when his contract at Turf Moof expires at the end of June and he’s expected to make a move back to a Premier League club.

Interest in the defender from a Villa perspective was always there and as late as last week it appeared as though they were leading the race for his signature but the Athletic state that the club have now moved on to other targets.

Villa have already completed the permanent transfer of one central defender this summer, bringing in Diego Carlos from Sevilla but interest still remains for another left-sided player.

Nothing’s dead until it’s dead in football and there’s always the possibility of a renewed run at Tarkowski for the claret and blue, though it appears Everton are now front runners with the England international well under evens (5/6) to join the Toffees.
