How Aston Villa’s net spend in recent years compares to the rest of the Premier League

More and more cash is being coughed up in European football over recent years and Aston Villa have been one side that have arguably not spent their money wisely. Despite failing to finish in the top half of the Premier League table since winning promotion in 2019, Unai Emery’s side have one of the highest net spends over the past five years.

Villa’s net spend for the season they were promoted was only -£2.6m, however it quickly escalated as they splashed out on the likes of Wesley, Douglas Luiz and Mahmoud Trezeguet. They have since brought in some costly signings in Diego Carlos, Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey and others and are yet to convince fans that the £100m from Jack Grealish’s departure has been spent well.
