England will embark on a 'new chapter' as their manager confirms he won't stay on after losing the EURO 2024 final.

Former Aston Villa defender Gareth Southgate has confirmed he has resigned from his post as manager of the English national team.

The 53-year-old managed his 102nd and final match as the Three Lions lost 2-1 to Spain in the final of EURO 2024. His resignation brings to an end an eight-year reign which saw them reach two EURO finals, as well as a World Cup semi-final.

In a statement shared on the account of the England national team, a statement written by Southgate read: "As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.

"But it's time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday's final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.

"I have had the privilege of leading a large group of players in 102 games. Every one of them has been proud to wear the three lions on their shirts, and they have been a credit to their country in so many ways."

Villa duo Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins will now have a new manager to impress when the UEFA Nations League begins in September. England are in Group C against Ireland, Finland and Greece and will begin their campaign on September 7 at the Aviva Stadium.

Watkins, following a stellar season with the Villa, played only 58 minutes at the Euros but netted the winner against the Netherlands in the semi-final. Konsa was an unused substitute in all three of England's group matches but played against Slovakia, Switzerland and the Netherlands, with Southgate giving him 94 minutes of pitch time.
