Former Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard may be set for a new job this summer, and not all that far from Villa Park.

Gerrard has been out of work since losing his Villa job in October following a disappointing start to the season. Gerrard failed to last a full year at Villa Park after guiding the club to a 14th place finish before picking up two wins in the first 12 games of the campaign just gone. The former Liverpool midfield arrived in the West Midlands after an impressive stint with Rangers, guiding the club to a Scottish Premiership title in 2021.

In truth, Gerrard’s managerial pedigree hasn’t been established yet, but his playing reputation certainly helps.

And he could now land a job in the East Midlands, with the Daily Mail reporting that Gerrard could be handed the Leicester City job. Another former Villa boss Dean Smith failed to save the Foxes from relegation to the Championship, and while Smuth has held talks with the club, it looks likely he will be moved on.

It’s claimed Leicester have also held talks with Scott Parker as they plan for a season in the second tier, and they are also said to be considering Gerrard for the role. But they are not alone, with another relegated club in Leeds United also holding talks with Gerrard, according to the report. Either way, it looks likely Gerrard will have to drop down to the Championship, and that won’t come as a surprise following his disappointing last stint in the Premier League.

The former Liverpool midfielder has not been helped by the success of Unai Emery at Villa since October, with the Spaniard showing what is possible with a very similar squad, even if Villa were not helped by injuries early in the campaign.
