Former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell believes Newcastle United should sign Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

It is understood Villa are open to selling the Brazilian who has one year remaining on his contract this summer with Serie A sides Roma and AC Milan both showing interest.

Luiz responded to a post via Instagram recently following rumours of him leaving the club. Sharing a picture of himself from the official club account - he simply captioned it ‘Villa,’ with a claret love heart next to it.

Whilst you can read into that what you will, there is no denying that he is currently happy in the West Midlands, especially considering his real-life partner Alisha Lehmann, is a star player for Aston Villa Women.

But that won’t make him immune to a transfer and though a couple of Italian giants are sniffing around, Campbell reckons the Magpies would be a perfect fit for the Brazilian.

Newcastle have already signed a player from Villa this summer - Matt Targett, who joined on a permanent basis for £15million following a successful half-season loan spell at St James’ Park.

And they have been told to continue doing business with the claret and blue by weighing up a move for Luiz.

“I like Douglas Luiz,” Campbell told Football Insider.

“He is a strong player and is somebody who is young but Premier League proven.

“It is about the squad though. Newcastle are looking to be that team who step up and challenge for European spots etc. If you are going to be that team you need a squad. They have not had the squad.

“There was a real lack of investment previously. They have got the new ownership now and Eddie Howe, who has done a brilliant job so far.

“Douglas Luiz is a player who could really go up there and excel. He is one of those guys who is a seven out of 10 every week.

“He’d be a great option alongside (Bruno) Guimaraes.”

Elsewhere and Villa continue to be linked with a move for exciting Portuguese midfielder Otavio as Steven Gerrard continues to look to strengthen his squad.
