Aston Villa, Man United & Sunderland legend makes offer to Ryan Reynolds & Wrexham

Former Aston Villa striker Dwight Yorke has admitted his desire to get back into football management, and one rising club in particular could be on the agenda.

The 51-year-old has only managed one team in his career, and that was Australian side Macarthur, but he lasted just a few months, despite leading them to silverware.

He had previously gone for the Villa job before Steven Gerrard was appointed, and also applied for roles at Sutton United and Perth Glory, but was unsuccessful in his job application attempts.

“I'm unemployed as a manager and I'm very passionate about trying to get back into the industry," he said in an interview with OLBG.

He was speaking as part of a longer question, as he asked whether he would consider managing a team 'like' Wrexham given the buzz around the Racecourse Ground at the moment. The Welsh outfit are owned by Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds, and Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney. Wrexham have a documentary that is in to its second series, and will air on Disney+.

Legendary forward Yorke added: "If Wrexham approached me and asked me to manage the team, I'd consider it. I have to make a decision that aligns with my ideas and ambitions. If Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney matched my mindset, then it's a good opportunity for me.

"There's a lot of hype around the club and that's understandable because of what the owners bring to the club. If the opportunity presents itself to me and have that initial conversation with the owners about our vision for the club, then it's a serious and exciting gig. It's a football job that you need to be your best at, not somewhere to have fun."

Yorke had a 19-year playing career that began at Villa Park, having been discovered by Graham Taylor. He scored 98 goals in 287 games for Villa, before being sold to Manchester United in 1998, scoring 65 goals in 152 games for the Red Devils, winning the Premier League title four times, and was a part of their treble-winning side in 1999.

His other clubs included Villa's inter-city rivals Birmingham City, as well as A-League outfit Sydney, and later Sunderland where he finished his playing career.

Wrexham currently have a manager in place, with Phil Parkinson in charge. The 55-year-old took over in the summer of 2021 on a rolling contract, and led them to the National League title last season, ending the clubs 15-year absence from the Football League. Wrexham are currently 16th in League Two, and were eliminated by Parkinson's former club Bradford City on Tuesday night.
