Iconic former Premier League striker Dwight Yorke believes Aston Villa have a good chance of beating Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Yorke, widely recognised as a Villa legend having scored 97 goals in 284 appearances for the club, reckons Bayern will have a tough time claiming any points whatsoever on Wednesday night.

Villa rounded off the unbeaten month of September with a 2-2 draw away at Ipswich Town on Sunday, following on from wins over Wycombe, Wolves, Young Boys and Everton. Unai Emery will be keen to carry over the momentum into midweek for what promises to be the toughest test yet.

Yorke, meanwhile, hopes Villa don’t get overwhelmed by the size of the occasion. Speaking to Prime Casino, the Trinidadian and Tobagonian explained why Bayern won’t be looking forward to playing Unai Emery’s in-form Villa team and hoped that the Birmingham giants don’t freeze on the night because of the size of the occasion.

“I don’t think Bayern Munich will be taking this game lightly. They’re up against a team playing consistently, particularly at Villa Park. It’s a fantastic stadium, back in a huge competition, and it’ll be a huge night for Villa.

“Villa fans will have longed to see something like this for years. This will be a historic moment for the club in terms of getting back into the Champions League. It’s huge. It’s huge in every aspect and I hope the players don’t freeze because it’s Bayern. That’s what top players look forward to, and they’ve got international players, and some experience in that team.

“I don’t think Bayern will be really looking forward to the game, coming here. It’s not going to be easy. I would not be surprised if Villa were to turn them over. Bayern are off to a very good start this season, but we’ll see where Villa are,” Yorke said.

Villa’s clash with Munich kicks off at 8pm on Wednesday and is available to stream live on TNT Sports.
