Aston Villa were fortunate to hold on as they were held to a 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

The visitors started on the front foot and were allowed a spell of possession. Ipswich's players backed off as Youri Tielemans let fly from 25 yards out but his shot sailed over the bar.

Against the run of play, Ipswich took the lead through Liam Delap. Villa failed to clear their lines, and Jack Clarke pulled the ball back for Delap to fire low at the near post under Emi Martinez.

Villa only trailed for seven minutes as Ollie Watkins showed good determination to work the ball into the box, and forced Jacob Greaves into kicking the ball away, which allowed Watkins to lay the ball off to Rogers, and slalom the ball past Arijanet Muric.

Moments after conceding their equaliser, Axel Tuanzebe pulled away from Pau Torres and headed a shot just over the bar as Ipswich sought a quick response. Another chance shortly followed as Ipswich allowed Leif Davies in down the left, and Clarke headed just over the bar.

As seen a few times this season, Villa recovered from going behind and then moved in front. A crisp passing move was finished off with Leon Bailey finding Watkins with a pin-point cross and with an expert header Watkins beat Muric.

Emi Martinez preserved Villa's lead as he did well to deal with Kalvin Phillips's effort after lacing up a powerful shot from the edge of the box. Martinez continued to atone for conceding the early goal as in a one-on-one, he blocked well with his foot.

It was a scrappy start to the second half with Ipswich shading it in terms of chances, but neither side had any real chances of note in the opening quarter. Unai Emery made a double change with Morgan Rogers withdrawn due to a precautionary measure after a complaint of a tight hamstring, as well as Leon Bailey, with Jaden Philogene and Jhon Duran introduced.

As the clock struck the 70th minute, Stuart Attwell was faced with a decision as Sam Morsy, already on a yellow, looked to trod on the recently introduced Philogene. Emery looked on from the touchline, but VAR deemed it not to be a sending off offence.

The hosts got themselves back on level terms as they broke on the counter-attack. Konsa's ball was cut out, and they broke down the right, with Delap moving past Konsa, and Carlos, before striking the ball home.

Emery rolled the dice again as Emi Buendia, along with Ian Maatsen, and Ross Barkley were introduced. The Argentine had the chance to score immediately from a favourable position, but his attempt went horribly wide.

Ipswich finished the match the stronger of the two sides and caused Villa some problems in stoppage time. Jack Taylor forced Martinez to save a shot he struck from just outside the box, and Villa looked uneasy from their corner-kicks. Stuart Attwell sounded his whistle which came to the relief of Villa, who could count themselves fortunate to come away from Suffolk with a point.

Aston Villa player ratings vs Ipswich Town

Emi Martinez - 7

Perhaps he could have done better with Ipswich’s goal but he made up for it with two good saves in the first half.

Lucas Digne (subbed off, 82) - 6

An otherwise quiet first half for Digne, with Ipswich opting to attack down Konsa’s side. Picked up a cheap yellow card for kicking the ball away.

Pau Torres - 6

Out of the two centre-backs, Torres perhaps performed the better out of him and Carlos as he was a bit more conservative in his play.

Diego Carlos - 5

In the first half, Delap was able to get in front of Carlos who lost his man, but fortunately, Martinez made the save. Delap turned him inside out for his second goal.

Ezri Konsa - 5

Unfortunately at fault for Delap’s goal. He was sloppy cheaply gave away possession just outside the box and then failed to keep up with the overlapping attacker. The return of Matty Cash is needed so Konsa can play in his more natural position.

Youri Tielemans (subbed off, 82) - 6

This game passed the Belgian by with Ipswich showing a bit more edge in the centre of the park.

Amadou Onana - 6

In the first half, he was perhaps a bit guilty of overplaying things a bit. Delap’s goal came from Villa failing to clear their lines, and Onana had the chance to clear.

Jacob Ramsey - 6

Other than a shot that was skied over the bar, there wasn’t much of note from Ramsey.

Morgan Rogers (subbed off, 63) - 7

Took his goal well. He’ll be glad to get off the mark for the season.

Leon Bailey (subbed off, 63) - 7

A brilliant cross for Watkins’ goal. He put it on a plate for him and he can be happy with his goal contribution.

Ollie Watkins (subbed off, 82) - 7

A well-taken header from the man who is Villa’s main source for goals. He was determined to supply Rogers for the equaliser too. Led by example, but had an otherwise quiet second-half.

Jhon Duran (subbed on, 63) - 5

Came on, but didn’t have any chances of note.

Jaden Philogene (subbed on, 63) - 5

Emi Buendia (subbed on, 82) - 5

He saw his name in the headlines, but Buendia’s free-kick failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

Ross Barkley (subbed on, 82) - 5

He was presented with one opportunity but Muric was well behind it.

Ian Maatsen (subbed on, 82) - 5

Came on with a bit of a spring in his step.
