The Carney Chukwuemeka transfer saga at Aston Villa is showing no signs of reaching a conclusion and Wednesday evening could have thrown yet another spanner in the works.

A brilliant brace from the 18-year-old whilst on international duty saw him steal the headlines as England’s young Lions ran out 3-1 winners over Republic of Ireland.

It was his third goal in just six appearances for England U19s following his call up to the squad in September 2021 and it was a performance that highlighted him as a class above many of his counterparts.

His well taken goals either side of half-time were a statement made on the pitch by the teenager away from all the noise off of it, ‘put me on the field and I will deliver.’

It’s an understandably tough situation for Villa boss Steven Gerrard who has gone on record multiple times stating his desire to keep him at the club.

Speaking in January he said: “We want him to sign and to extend and reward him for what we’ve seen so far.

“We’ve got big aspirations and a big road map for Carney but, in terms of answering your question, there’s only one person who can answer and that’s Carney.”

The big road map Gerrard mentions is key. There’s a long-term plan in place that would see Chukwuemeka’s minutes increase until he becomes a week in week out starter, similar to how we’re seeing Jacob Ramsey this year.

If there’s anyone you’d be confident in when it comes to advising an attack minded midfielder in the early stages of his career it’s Gerrard but unfortunately as things stand at the moment, the patience from the teenager’s side of things seems to have run thin.

Those talks that the manager spoke of in January have made no progress with the boss adding after the victory over Leeds United at Elland Road that Villa have “done everything we can from our side to try and make them progress,” but to no avail.

The former Liverpool captain certainly doesn’t come across the type of man you can hold to ransom in these situations and those in the Villa hierarchy such as Christian Purslow and Wes Edens certainly aren’t.

It’s a dangerous game that Chukwuemeka is playing with no guarantees that a transfer away from Villa Park would work out but whilst he’s performing when given the opportunity on the field, he does hold some cards that make any future moves from the Villa end just that little bit more tough to accept.

What is your opinion on the whole thing? Do you want to see Carney sign a new deal or are you indifferent on the matter?
