New Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard will be looking to lean on his Liverpool reputation as he wants to prize centre-back Joe Gomez away from Anfield to Villa Park on loan.

Gerrard replaced Dean Smith who was sacked just over three weeks ago, after a run of straight five losses, culminating in a 1-0 defeat at Southampton, courtesy of an Adam Armstrong wonder-goal.

The return of Joel Matip, Virgil Van Dijk and the emergence of new signing Ibrahima Konate have severely limited Gomez’s playing time, and he could recapture his impressive form under Gerrard.

After a shaky start to the season, Liverpool have fully found their best form, winning away 5-0 at arch rivals Manchester United and easing through their apparent group of death that featured Porto, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.

Gomez started to have a blossoming relationship with Virgil Van Dijk, creating an impenetrable defence but he suffered a long-term injury, and his game time has been largely inconsistent since.

Jurgen Klopp is not known for chopping and changing his squad, something we’ve seen this season as the great form of Kostas Tsimikas hasn’t been enough to warrant a start over Andy Robertson.

Gerrard has enjoyed a good start at Aston Villa, with two wins from two and Gomez could slot right in next to captain Tyrone Mings, to form a great pairing.

Gomez’s career looked to be promising early on, he joined Liverpool from Charlton in 2015, ending an 8-year affair with the London club and made 21 appearances in the Championship. He has been capped at u16, u17, u19, u21 and made his full men’s debut in 2017, and has gone one to make 11 appearances for his country.

It’s unlikely Villa will spend big in January after spending big fees on the likes of Danny Ings, Leon Bailey, Emiliano Buendia and Ashley Young, all transfers combined proceeded the money the club received for Jack Grealish.

Gerrard could look to his former club Rangers, as fresh rumours have linked Ianis Hagi with a move to Villa Park, but Joe Gomez would very much be the marquee signing, if it happens.
