Aston Villa are ‘very close’ to agreeing a deal for Southampton and Poland defender Jan Bednarek.

The 26-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Villa Park following the injury sustained by summer signing Diego Carlos and talkSPORT transfer journalist Alex Crook has now confirmed that a deal is imminent.

Villa have been in the market for a central defender ever since Carlos ruptured his achilles tendon during the 2-1 victory over Everton earlier in August.

Tyrone Mings, Calum Chambers and Ezri Konsa have all failed to hold down a starting spot since Steven Gerrard arrived at the helm and with Kortney Hause recently leaving to join Watford on loan, it has left the claret and blue looking extremely thin at the back.

Bednarek looks to be their answer though with Crook revealing on talkSPORT on Friday afternoon that a deal is expected to be completed between the two parties.

The Polish international has over 150 first team appearances for Southampton and has been a nailed on starter for the Saints since his arrival back in 2017.
