Aston Villa v Manchester City: Where to watch, stream details, team news, betting odds & more

Can Steven Gerrard’s perfect start to life with Aston Villa continue when the Premier League champions come to Villa Park on Wednesday?

Aston Villa will be looking to make it three wins in a row under new manager Steven Gerrard when Manchester City visit Villa Park on Wednesday evening.

It’s been a perfect start so far for Gerrard in the west midlands. After five successive defeats prior to his arrival - six points from six is better than even he could have probably hoped for.

But Pep Guardiola and his City side will without a doubt prove the most difficult task yet.

The current Premier League champions are overflowing with talent and with the potential return of former hero Jack Grealish to Villa Park, too - this particular midweek game has some added spice.

Team news

Gerrard revealed that Danny Ings will miss Wednesday evening’s game.

Trezeguet should be returning to under 23 action for some minutes over the next week and Morgan Sanson is edging closer to a potential start.

It’s looking a little worse for City who will definitely be without influential midfielder Kevin Du Bruyne who is out with coronavirus. Aymeric Laporte picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in the win against West Ham United and will serve a one match ban against Villa.

Phil Foden & boyhood Villan Jack Grealish are also doubts. Both had respective knocks and will be gametime decisions.

City have won their last five games in a row in all competitions including impressive victories over Paris Saint-Germain & Manchester United in that time. Their one defeat came to the team Villa recently overcame, Crystal Palace.

The claret & blue were in torrid form until the arrival of Gerrard but the former Liverpool captain seems to have transformed them in such a short amount of time.

With the new manager bounce still in full-swing, Villa could have every chance of getting something in this one.

Head-to-head record

If you’re a Villa fan and a believer of recent results meaning something, look away now.

The claret & blue have lost their last seven games in a row against City and haven’t even picked up a point since 2015.

You have to go back even further for the last time Villa beat the Citizens - 28th September 2013. Karim El Ahmadi, Leandro Bacuna & Andreas Weimann the scorers in a thrilling 3-2 victory at Villa Park.

Predicted line-up

Aston Villa (4-3-3): Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett; McGinn, Nakamba, Luiz; Bailey, Watkins, Young

Manchester City (4-3-3): Ederson; Walker, Dias, Stones, Cancelo; Gundogan, Fernandinho, Rodri; Mahrez, Jesus, Sterling

Score prediction

Aston Villa 1-1 Manchester City

I think it will be difficult for Villa to make it three on the bounce with the Premier League champions coming to town but I do feel they have it in them to snatch a point.

After a torrid month or so before Gerrard’s arrival, too, a point would be a great result and a statement in itself.

Betting odds

Aston Villa: 17/2

Draw: 17/4

Manchester City: 2/7
