The Villains hope to bounce back from their 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Boxing Day. Home form hasn’t been a problem for Villa but on their travels they have struggled.

Ahead of kick-off, it’s pretty tight between the two sides. Villa are eighth and Brighton 10th with just two points separating them. If Villa can win, they could go up to sixth. Here’s the latest injury and team news.

Aston Villa team news

Jhon Duran and Matty Cash are both missing through suspension but will be out for different periods. Duran was sent off for apparently kicking out at Fabian Schar. Villa said they would appeal it, but they were unsuccessful, and as a result he will now serve a three-game ban.

Matty Cash on the other hand picked up a yellow card, his fifth of the campaign. As a result, he will be out for one game, because players who pick up five bookings up to and including the 19th match of the campaign, get a ban.

Jacob Ramsey remains a doubt but is pushing hard to be a part of the squad. He has been out for over a month with a hamstring injury, but has trained normally, and could come in to Unai Emery’s thinking.

In his pre-match press conference, Emery said: “He is close to being in the squad, to be available to play.

“We have Saturday and Sunday preparing. The last training session he did normally with the team, and hopefully, he will be in the squad for Monday.”

Out: Jhon Duran, and Matty Cash. Doubt: Jacob Ramsey.

Brighton & Hove Albion team news

It’s likely that Danny Welbeck is out for the remainder of the year. The former Manchester United striker has an ankle injury. Brighton sent him for a scan and are waiting specialist advice on how they should manage him.

James Milner hasn’t played since the end of August. A definitive return hasn’t been given for Milner who suffered a hamstring injury during the September international break.

Ferdi Kadioglu and Jack Hinshelwood are slight doubts for this evening. Fabian Hurzeler said on December 19: “I hope they are back quickly, and I also have the feeling they are back soon.

“But I can’t give you a clear timeframe. They are training on the pitch, they are doing rehab, and I am sure it won’t take too long.”

Evan Ferguson didn’t play against Brentford on Friday, due to an injury. His future has been discussed amid talk of a possible loan move. Adam Webster has been out since the beginning of October but could soon make a return.

Out: Danny Welbeck, James Milner. Doubt: Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood, Evan Ferguson, and Adam Webster.
